In this Conga Chops Masterclass we’ll take a deep dive into the essential concepts needed to develop independence with young master percussionist Roberto Jr. Vizcaíno! He is the son of the legendary Cuban multi-percussionist Roberto Vizcaíno, a renowned performer and educator, who played an integral part in pioneering the of the implementation of independence (playing multiple instruments at once) as it pertains to Afro-Cuban percussion. Roberto Jr. has forged his own path, building on has father’s concepts and legacy, and is currently holding down the rhythm section alongside Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez in Chucho Valdés’ Royal Quartet.

In the Interview section of this Masterclass we’ll learn about Roberto Jr.’s musical beginnings, his time spent studying classical and latin percussion in Mexico, and how he’s begun to make an impact to the evolution of the conga drum at such a young age.

What we’ll cover in this Masterclass can apply to developing independence using a wide variety Afro-Cuban percussion instruments, included but not limited to Bongó, Congas, and Timbal. Lastly we’ll get a chance to witness Roberto Jr.’s mastery as he flows effortlessly through different rhythms, shapes, and emotions, all while showcasing his incredible independence in jaw-dropping ten minute open solo using his entire percussion arsenal!
